I heard from several people that had a similar surgery as mine...so my question is to those ladies.
How long did it take to to feel normal or to have your strength back?
It's no secret I'm not a patient person ....so I'm just wondering am I being a whiny baby or is this normal?

Angie, I have never had your type of surgery, but have had other types. My best advise to you is do a little each day, paired with some walking , just to get your strength & energy back. Any surg. takes a lot out of you. It is just best to take it slow & you will see before long you will feel like your old self. Best wishes for feeling better.

I have the same advice as Donna. Hsving several surgeries myself....not the same as your's....I have realized that any surgery can take a lot of of you. Just be patient and don't rush yourself. Hugs, Cindy
I had surgery for tonsil cancer and if you are asking about pain in your throat then it will take some time but there are some things out there to help with that so email me and I can help with that. if you are asking about energy they say for every hour of surgery it takes a month to get strength back and begin to feel like your old self. HOnestly take the time to take care of yourself now in the end you will do better in the long run. Patience is the key. YOu will do fine just be patient with yourself. I know for me it took some time to start doing better but you will get better......I know it gets frustrating at times but time is the healer. Take good care of you!
Hey Angie, I had two thyroid surgeries so I know exactly what you are going through. I lost my voice and had trouble swallowing water after my second surgery. I would say it was probably a good solid 10 days before I really started to feel more like myself. I don't remember exactly but I think it took about 4 weeks for my voice to come back to normal and my swallowing was normal again somewhere between there. Although everybody is different and responds differently feeling tired and run down could mean your hormones are still off and it may pay to put a call into you Dr. if you don't feel better in a couple of days. Like everyone else said, take it slow, give yourself a break and just try to do a little bit more every day! Thinking of you and hope you feel better soon!
I had thyroid surgery in my early 20's, so I'm sure the comparison isn't the same. I don't remember having too much trouble bouncing back (at that age), but I do know that it took a lot of trial-and-error on what the dosage of thyroid hormone would be that I should take. Frequent blood tests to check my thyroid hormone levels and then tweaking the level of the dosage. It's a process, Angie. It will take some time to get it all just right. Try to enjoy your 'downtime'. I know it's hard for some folks to do, but it may be just what you need :-) You've already earned Fiji -- RELAX a little! :-D
God bless your journey.
Angie,
My husband had part of thyroid removed this summer and the Dr. said 3 weeks of no lifting and bending. He had to take calcium pills, get hormones checked. He was also tired at times. He is on hormone pills and his calcium levels are fine. He had problems for a year and every test you can think of was taken and then one day a Dr. said he had a tumor on a thyroid and asked him if he knew that. Of course he didn't and then it was tested but the Dr. didn't get enough cells out so they had to stick the needle in again and still didn't get enough cells out so they did surgery and took half out tested it and it came back okay. Just having that tumor on it made things out of whack and now he seems to be okay. He has to take hormone pills and have his levels checked.
Your situation is more seriuos so take time to get better and be sure to ask questions to the Dr. and always ask us what or if we had any experience with something that bothers you. Sometimes someone else can think of something that the Dr. may not have told you. I know my husband body chemistry is dif. from a womans but is going to take time.
I also had thyroid surgery. As one of the other ladies stated it depends on your thyroid medicine they put you on. One thing I would say is keep in touch with your Dr. They had me on a to high of a dose and I thought I was losing my mind. Could not keep a thought. Blood test will show when the dose is right.
Love your web sites.
Praying for your supernatural speedy recovery.

Angie: I recall being taught in nursing school that for each day a patient is debilitated it take 3 days to recover. You were feeling ill prior to your surgery so count those days as well. By my calculation it is going to take you six weeks to get back to normal. I am basing that on not feeling well the week prior to surgery and then the week post op.

Hello
My entire thyroid was removed due to cancer. The recovery from the surgery took about nine days. Two weeks after the surgery, radiation treatments were given, then placed Levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone) medication was prescribed (very high dosage- which I have been on ever since). I joke I never realized how much that little gland did until it was gone! You are lucky – that you have part of your thyroid still intact.
Keep diligent with your doctor, if your energy is not what you think it should be once on medication, have your levels retested- and ask for an adjustment to your medication- even if it means an extra office visit or trip to the lab.
The following website has wonderful information that may help http://thyca.org/

Hi Angie,
I had my whole thyroid removed and was able to go back to work after 2 weeks, and actually attended convention 3 weeks after - which was pretty good considering I Iive in Canada, and so there was significant travel involved. I admit that I was probably more tired than normal for a month or so after though, but it was probably also because it took some time for the syntheroid to kick in.
Angie,
I have little cysts all over my thyroid. When the doctor tests my hormone levels, he says everything is normal. I was fatigued all the time. I finally saw a naturopath and he put me on a low dose of thyroid medication even though the tests indicated everything was ok. I feel much better on thyroid medication. You'll know when your thyroid dose is too high because it makes your heart race. It is definitely trial and error to get the right dosage. Get plenty of rest and be persistent with your doctor if you feel like your hormones are still out of whack. I'm praying for a speedy recovery.

Oh, sweet impatient Angie - please don't be so hard on yourself and try to give your body the time it needs to heal. It takes time to recover from any surgery but little by little you'll regain your strength. You've not only had surgery but have survived a very difficult year and then the loss of your fur babies on top of everything else. I know you're anxious to feel normal and it will happen. So rest and watch your favorite shows and do what you can each day and you'll see, in no time you'll be back to your old self and better than ever. Patience just might be the lesson learned. Keeping you in my thoughts & prayers.

I know about the recovery process-patience is something I need to master. I was ill for most of June and finally when I went to the hospital I was there for 33 days, 12 of which were in ICU along with surgery. The surgery recovery is going well, however with water bloat and swelling at that time, I was up 60 # and could not move my legs. So, the recovery process is to regain movement and core stength. Thank goodness for wonderful family and friends as they do help alot. I pray everyday to the caregivers and thank the Lord I am alive and well.
Whenever I have a surgery I find that it is the ansesthia that makes it hard to recover. Even though the wound is healing I always had that lack of energy kind of lazy feeling. I found eating right, giving in to the urge to rest, get a proper nights sleep or a nap if I didn't help me get thru those day.
Will pray you start feeling your strength increased with each new day.
